Lack of water

After a long day of work putting part of our new fence up (post and pics coming soon), I took a nap. I awoke from my nap to Amanda telling me we had no water. So I go downstairs and the water pump is running, but there is no water coming out of the taps, nor any pressure being registered on the pump. So I figure maybe we’be left something turned on somewhere. I check the hoses outside, and they’re all turned off. I check the taps and they’re all off too. I check the new washing machine, and its jot on, or leaking. Great. So to be safe I turn off the water leading to the hoses outside and to the washer. Pump is still running, with no pressure. So I turn off the pump to give it a rest. After some time I go back down and turn it back on, and still no pressure.

I really don’t know too much about the pump or well, so I’m out of ideas. I give dad a call to see what he can suggest. He got me to try some things to determine if it was the pump or the well. After filling the pump with water manually and running it with the fill bolt off and it spraying water everywhere for a short time then the pressure dying, we determined that the pump was in fact running fine.  So that left an issue with the well, or the foot valve down in the well.

Dads thought then was that the well could possibly have gone dry, but that seems unlikely because of our proximity to the river. To test that out I left the pump turned off for an hour or so, then went back down and turned it on. Nothing. No pressure, no water.  So maybe it wasn’t a dry well, or maybe it was q very dry well. Decided to leave it alone for the night, and try it again in the morning.

Woke up early and went down to try again. Filled the pump with water and turned it on. Nothing. Turned it off, checked that there was still water in it, then turned it on again. 5 psi of pressure. Good start. Waiting a few minutes it climbed up to 40 psi, even better. Few more minutes it had climbed to 60 psi and seemed to stay there. Left it running fore about 10 mins, and went up to check the taps, and they ran with normal pressure. But the pump was still running. Decided to let it run while we went across to Angie’s to get a shower. when I returned home, the house was quiet. Went down stairs and the pump was no longer running. Went back upstairs and turned on a tap and got water with normal pressure.

After that, Amanda mum ad come over to let us know we could use their shower of we wanted. She said that when the precious owner was in the house, she had run out of water once also, so it has happened before. We are thinking that because of the lack of rain recently and the heat, that we did run out of water. So hopefully with the rain this morning, and tome for water to seep in from the river, we won’t have an issue tonight when we get home.

*UPDATE*

There is still water as of tonight! Amanda took a quick bath, and water pressure has been normal. So it looks like it was just the well going dry. Hopefully with the rain in the forecast for the next little bit, and the river being so close, it will fill up enough that we won’t have to worry about it for a long time still.
